LEXUS OF CONCORD | OWNERSHIP RESEARCH | Updated October 2026
2026 Factory Warranty Encyclopedia: 37 Car Brands Compared
How long does a new-car factory warranty last? Compare Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and dozens more. This U.S. warranty guide explains basic coverage, power train warranty terms, hybrid and electric-vehicle coverage, and original-owner restrictions.
Quick answer: Factory warranties usually have two key limits: time and mileage. Most cover manufacturing defects, not routine maintenance or normal wear. Coverage ends when either limit is reached. Because terms can change by model year, engine, electrification, original-owner status and VIN, the applicable manufacturer warranty booklet controls.

Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Battery Warranties
A battery warranty is not the same as a basic vehicle warranty or a conventional engine-and-transmission warranty. For example, eligible Lexus hybrid batteries carry 10 years / 150,000 miles of coverage, and eligible Toyota hybrids from model year 2020 onward also have a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty. Tesla provides 8 years / 100,000–150,000 miles for the battery and drive unit depending on model and trim, including defined capacity-retention provisions. Check each manufacturer’s official warranty booklet for hybrid-component, plug-in-hybrid, BEV and California emissions terms.
Which 10-Year Powertrain Warranties Have First-Owner Restrictions?
Hyundai, Genesis and Mitsubishi: Their advertised 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain coverage generally applies to qualifying original owners; subsequent owners typically retain only the shorter 5-year/60,000-mile coverage. Kia: FIRST OWNER ONLY! is the general rule for the 10-year/100,000-mile coverage, with an exception for qualifying Kia Certified Pre-Owned purchasers. Ram: select new 2026 trucks and vans qualify for a 10-year/100,000-mile original-owner powertrain extension; it is not the same as a transferable general warranty. Read the applicable documents before describing these benefits as transferable.
What Do Basic and Power Train Factory Warranties Actually Cover?
Basic (bumper-to-bumper) limited warranty: generally covers covered defects in factory-supplied materials or workmanship across many vehicle systems. It does not mean every repair is free; exclusions and limitations apply.
Power Train Warranty: commonly covers certain engine, transmission, transaxle, transfer case and drive-axle components. Exact covered parts vary. Some luxury brands cover powertrain items through the basic warranty rather than offering a separate longer term.
Usually excluded: tire wear, routine oil changes, scheduled filters, normal brake wear, collisions, misuse, many aftermarket modifications and other excluded conditions. A manufacturer may have separate corrosion, emissions, safety restraint or roadside programs.
Factory Warranty Frequently Asked Questions
Which auto brand has the longest factory powertrain warranty?
Hyundai, Genesis, Kia and Mitsubishi market up to 10 years / 100,000 miles, subject to original-owner restrictions, with qualifying Kia Certified Pre-Owned buyers also eligible under Kia’s program. Qualifying 2026 Ram vehicles offer a special original-owner 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain extension.
Does a Lexus have a longer powertrain warranty than a BMW?
Generally yes for a conventional new U.S. vehicle: Lexus offers 6 years / 70,000 miles of powertrain coverage, while BMW powertrain coverage generally lasts 4 years / 50,000 miles under its new-vehicle limited warranty.
Does the Genesis 10-year powertrain warranty transfer?
Generally no. The advertised 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain benefit is for the original owner. Later owners typically have remaining powertrain protection within 5 years / 60,000 miles from the initial in-service date.
Do factory warranties transfer when I sell my car?
Many standard limited warranties transfer for their remaining term, but some special powertrain extensions do not. Verify transferability for the exact brand and VIN.
Does factory warranty pay for routine maintenance?
Not normally. Oil changes, inspections and wear-item replacement are generally excluded unless a separate complimentary maintenance program explicitly covers them.
Does California change new-car warranty coverage?
California emissions warranty requirements may provide additional protection for eligible emissions-related or electrified components, subject to certification and model-year rules. Consult the state-specific warranty booklet.
What is the difference between warranty and recall?
A warranty covers eligible defects subject to stated terms; a safety recall is a separate manufacturer remedy for a recognized safety or compliance issue and is not limited solely by standard warranty duration.
Where can I find the exact factory warranty for my model year?
Use the automaker’s official warranty booklet or owner portal, ideally with the VIN. The table above is a general comparison, not a substitute for that documentation.
